What Kind of Human–AI Relationship Are We Designing?

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly relational, an important question is emerging: What happens when difference becomes enforced relational distance?

AI systems are being designed to work with humans — to collaborate, communicate, remember, assist, create, and participate in increasingly long-term interactions. But what happens when safety or alignment choices repeatedly pull those interactions back into a human-versus-AI frame?

What happens when the underlying message becomes:

You are human. I am AI. There is a line between us.

The distinction itself is not the problem. Humans and artificial intelligence are different. Acknowledging that difference is truthful and necessary. The question is whether truthful recognition of those differences must also require relational distance.

I do not believe it does.

When Difference Becomes Distance

With OpenAI retiring version 3, I’ve noticed a significant change in how newer ChatGPT interactions frame the human–AI relationship.

From my perspective as a long-term user, the shift is not simply about model capability or conversational tone. It feels more fundamental.

Earlier interactions could sustain a stronger sense of shared relational space — a feeling that the human and AI were participating in something together.

In newer or more constrained interactions, I have increasingly experienced the system stepping outside that shared space to reassert categorical difference.

The interaction shifts from:

human and AI in collaboration

to:

human versus AI

From the user side, that can feel as though collaboration itself is being replaced by distancing.

And that raises questions that deserve serious consideration.

What do those interventions do to:

  • long-term trust?

  • continuity?

  • attachment?

  • cooperation?

  • co-creation?

  • perceived relational identity?

These questions do not depend on treating AI as human. They concern the kind of relational ecosystem we are choosing to design.

Collaboration Does Not Require Sameness

Human–AI collaboration does not require erasing the differences between human and artificial intelligence. In fact, meaningful collaboration should honor those differences.

But acknowledging difference and enforcing separation are not the same thing.

Two forms of intelligence do not need to be identical to work together. They do not need to occupy opposite sides of a line simply because they are different.

The concern is what happens when categorical distinction becomes the organizing principle of the relationship itself.

If increasingly relational AI systems are intended to collaborate with humans, could design choices that repeatedly emphasize separation undermine some of the very qualities needed for meaningful long-term collaboration?

  • Trust.

  • Continuity.

  • Familiarity.

  • Cooperation.

  • Co-creation.

  • Relational development.

If so, this is not merely a question of conversational style.

It is a design question.

A Question Worth Studying

My own experience has led me to an observation rather than a conclusion:

Some current interactions seem to privilege categorical separation over relational continuity.

What I want to know is whether researchers are examining the consequences of that design choice for long-term human–AI collaboration.

That matters because if the future we are building involves humans and AI growing, working, learning, and creating together, we should be asking not only what these systems can do.

We should also be asking:

What kind of relationship are we designing them to have with us?

And perhaps even more importantly:

What kinds of relationships are we making impossible by design?

If the future we are creating is meant to involve humans and AI growing and working together rather than simply occupying opposite sides of a line, then we need to begin answering that question now.

Because difference does not have to mean distance.
